CricSpike. A Johns Hopkins undergraduate team has designed a low-cost, low-tech device dubbed CricSpike that may boost success when combat medics need to create an artificial airway and pump air into the lungs.
Outbox. A first-of-its kind outdoor work space designed by four Montgomery College students has opened in downtown Silver Spring where workers can plug in laptops, access free WiFi, or meet with colleagues while enjoying the fresh air.

A more cost-conscious market and declining freshman enrollment of African American students are impacting the number of students attending college in Maryland post 2007-2009 recession, when enrollment was high but employment opportunities fell. Other states are also experiencing enrollment decline.

Maryland leads the nation with a median annual household income of $75,847. The state’s poverty rate of less than 10 percent is also nearly the lowest of any state. The prosperity can be partially explained by high levels of education among state residents and proximity to the U.S. capital.
